Basic Introduction to GIS Workshop The CGA is teaching this workshop on Feb. 1 and Feb. 15. Registration for the Feb. 1 workshop is full, but seats are still available for the workshop on Friday, February 15. Click here for more info on this workshop and to register. In addition CGA is teaching a full day Cartography Workshop on (April 26), and the GIS Institute Summer 2019 (June 4-14) is also open for application.

Geography Colloquium February 7 Dr. Xue Liu will present Big Geospatial Data Analysis And Machine Learning For Environmental, Urban, And Agricultural Applications on Thursday, February 7 at Noon in the CGIS South Building, Room S050. Read more about this talk.

ABCD-GIS Presentation February 28 Kostyantyn Bondarenko of the Harvard Ukranian Institute will present Building a Digital Atlas of Ukraine on February 28th at Noon in CGIS Knafel Room 450. Read more details about this talk.

EDC Award Deadline March 15 The Esri Development Center (EDC) Student of the Year is an annual award open to all Harvard students, sponsored by Esri and administered by the CGA. Its purpose is to recognize outstanding achievements in developing novel tools or techniques for geographic analysis. Submission deadline is March 10, 2019. Read more and apply for the award.

GIS Analysis of The Burden of Child Malnutrition in India The article "Burden of Child Malnutrition in India: A View from Parliamentary Constituencies" featured GIS analysis performed by the CGA, and was recently published in the journal Econonomic & Political Weekly Read the article. ArcGIS Desktop TLS Patch As part of improving ArcGIS Online security, Esri requires TLS 1.2 connections for ArcGIS Online services. If you use ArcGIS Desktop software to connect to ArcGIS Online for base map or other services, please check your desktop software version and take appropriate action before April 16th 2019 in order to continue using ArcGIS Online services.

  • ArcGIS Pro 2.0 or higher – no action needed.
  • ArcGIS Pro older versions – please upgrade to ArcGIS Pro 2.x.
  • ArcGIS ArcMap 10.7 (to be released later in 2019) – no action needed.
  • ArcGIS ArcMap 10.6.1 or older - Download and install the ArcGIS Desktop TLS patch for the version in use.
  • ArcGIS ArcMap 10.3.1 or older - please upgrade to ArcMap 10.6.x. For more information, see https://support.esri.com/en/tls.

    Historic Electoral Boundaries for India Available in HGL The Harvard Map Collection has recently acquired boundaries and election data for the 3rd Lok Sabha (lower house of Parliament) of India. The 3rd Lok Sabha dates from April 1962 - March 1967. View and download the data at the Harvard Geospatial Library.

    Book Talk: The Future is Asian Hosted by the Harvard South Asia Institute, Dr. Parag Khanna, managing partner of FutureMap, will discuss his latest book The Future is Asian, an exploration of Asian history and geo-politics which features multiple geographic visualizations. The presentation will be Tuesday, Feb. 19th, at 4:15 p.m. in room S250 in the CGIS South Building. For more on this event.

    Open GIScience Challenge The International Journal of Geographical Information Science is calling for applications to a special issue named "An Open GIScience Challenge". Accepted papers will be in the running for a $1,000 prize for best paper. Abstract submission deadline is March 1, 2019. Read more and apply.
