A Temporal Gazetteer for Historical Placenames The TGAZ project is developing an open API for indexing historical placename records. Based on the earlier China Historical GIS XML Webservice the TGAZ API is a new, multilingual gazetteer that allows for faceted queries. The query facets include: placenames, feature types, years of existence, parent jurisdiction names, and source collections. read more | |

I/UCRC for Spatiotemporal Thinking, Computing, and Applications (STC) Updates STC received a donation of 500-node HPC equipment, which was purchased at the price of approximately $4M, to establish the center's computing infrastructure. The infrastructure will be hosted at George Mason and provide shared access by the three sites of STC, GMU, Harvard, and UC-Santa Barbara. STC hosted its semi-annual IAB meeting on May 18-20, 2015 at George Mason University. Close to 50 center members attended to review the center's innovative research and identify new projects to be supported through collaborations among academia, industry, and agencies in the area of spatiotemporal thinking, computing and applications. read more | |

Esri has offered to conduct a 1.5-2 day Campus Facilities-focused requirements and brainstorming session on how universities could benefit from more directly tailored GIS solutions in the future. Esri is planning to review their existing plans and capabilities, but the broader discussion will focus on our needs, capabilities, and they would also like to hear more about existing workflows and processes that take advantage of GIS data. Chris Andrews and Eric Wittner from the Product Management team will be attending. July 7-8, 2015. |

Open Senior Geospatial Developer Position The Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA) seeks applications for a Senior Geospatial Developer. This position is primarily responsible for the design, development, implementation and maintenance of GIS software platforms at CGA. Other duties include providing technical consultation and support to faculty and staff across the university on GIS software development; guiding researchers in the correct way to select and use appropriate GIS software platforms and technologies; exploring new technologies and introducing them to the Harvard GIS community; maintaining local and cloud-based infrastructure (apply updates, troubleshoot performance issues, improve backup procedures, examine various alternatives to current virtual server setup); establishing and implementing software development standards and best practice protocols for CGA, developing code documentation and testing templates. read more |

Short-term GIS&RS Analyst Position - Harvard School of Public Health HSPH is looking to hire a student with expertise in spatial data acquisition, processing, and analysis to help with the research that studies health benefits of exposure and greenspace. The student will be compiling longitudinal datasets of various metrics of greenspace and linking them to health data for analyses to answer important questions about the potential benefits of increasing exposure to vegetation on health. read more |

International Symposium on Spatiotemporal Computing The 1st International Symposiums on Spatiotemporal Computing organized by STC will be held at George Mason University on July 13 to 15, 2015. This symposium is wide open with an objective to setup the foundation of research in spatiotemporal computing and establish the international community. read more |
